From here we handle the steps that must be taken in Brazil, such as probate, powers of attorney, certificates and apostilles, for clients who already live in Portugal or are preparing to move.
What we handle from São Paulo
Many matters between the two countries start or end in Brazil. At our São Paulo office, we mainly handle:
- Inheritance and probate in Brazil, in court or before a notary, when there are assets in Brazil and heirs in Portugal. See probate and estate division.
- Powers of attorney so that someone can act for you in Brazil while you live in Portugal. See powers of attorney between Brazil and Portugal.
- Certificates, corrections and apostilles for the Brazilian documents required in Portugal. See apostille and document translation.
- Recognition of Portuguese judgments by Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ), such as divorces granted in Portugal. See recognition of Portuguese judgments in Brazil.
- Property and assets in Brazil owned by people who live in Portugal: sale, gifts and inheritance. See assets in Brazil.
If you are moving to Portugal
Before the move, it is worth sorting out in Brazil what is harder to do from abroad later: up-to-date apostilled certificates, powers of attorney, your tax position and the assets you leave in the country. In São Paulo, we prepare these documents and agree the next steps with the team in Portugal, such as the visa, the NIF or the citizenship application.
How we work
Whichever office or city you are closest to, Sene & Araújo is always your point of contact. The first step is a conversation, in person by appointment or by video call, to understand your situation and list the documents needed. From there, the team handles the steps in Brazil and in Portugal and keeps you informed at every stage.
If you already live in Portugal, we can meet by video call and, for steps that require someone to be present in Brazil, we check whether a power of attorney is enough.
