D5 Visa – Higher Education

If you have already started a study program in a European country and intend to transfer or complement it in Portugal (that is, take part in an exchange, a double degree, a “sandwich” program or apply for a mobility grant), provided the program lasts up to 360 days, this visa is for you. What's more, it will allow you to carry out paid professional activity.

In this case, you must already hold a residence permit granted by a Member State of the European Union, valid for the entire period of the program. If you are covered by a European Union or multilateral mobility program, or by an agreement between higher education institutions, the law waives the residence visa: you only need to notify AIMA of the mobility up to 30 days before it begins (Articles 63 and 91-A of the Foreigners Act, Law 23/2007 (Lei de Estrangeiros)). In other cases, the visa must be requested at the competent Portuguese Consulate.

• Visa application form;
• Passport valid for more than 3 months;
• Means of subsistence (financial statements / income tax return / etc.);
• Proof of accommodation (letter of invitation / statement of responsibility / lease agreement / loan-for-use agreement / property purchase);
• Health insurance or, for those entitled to it, the Certificate of Entitlement to Medical Care (CDAM), issued in Brazil under the Brazil–Portugal social security agreement;
• Travel insurance meeting the standards of the European Union;
• Criminal Record Certificate;
• Two recent 3×4 color photos with a plain background;
• Residence permit issued by the EU Member State, valid for the entire period of the study program;
• Letter of acceptance from the university and the corresponding proof of enrollment;
• Authorization for AIMA – Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum to consult the applicant's Portuguese criminal record; and
• Payment of the applicable fees.
